You Are What You Brand

Usually the prevalent message found in college classrooms discussing marketing is that you “Must create a brand.” I am here to tell you that while this is true to some degree, it should not be the primary focus but rather the by-product.Why? Well, let’s look at the brands that we have all been exposed to on a regular basis. What comes to mind?Coca-Cola? Polar Bears, RefreshingBudweiser? Frogs and Clydesdale HorsesChevrolet? Like a Rock (Bob Seger song) McDonalds? Quick, simple, fast, Ronald McDonald, great way to keep the kids entertained and fedSo, after giving you some great examples of how companies are branding themselves, why do I still say that branding should be a by-product not a focus?Well, let me ask you this question. How much do you think you would recognize these brands if they had not spent millions of dollars on ad campaigns? Would you be able to chime in at precisely the right moment for the “Beef, it’s what’s for dinner song?” (You know you did it) if it hadn’t been burned into your mind by 100s of 1,000s of repetitions? What about the Budweiser frogs? Would you be able to recite the entire commercial if you hadn’t seen it so many times? Of course not, and neither could your customers. So unless you have a multi-million dollar marketing/advertising department in your company, you are going to need to find another way to brand yourself. What does that mean for you? Well, not to take away from the graphic designers out there, but the first thing to remember is that while a logo is important, a logo is not the most important part of a brand. Do you remember the logo for your dentist or local florist? What about the local coffee shop? If you do, good for you, you are attentive. But if you don’t, that’s okay. Neither do 98.7% of their other customers. Are you less likely to shop at any of these places because you can’t remember what their logo looks like? Probably not.But you are less likely to shop at these places if you have received poor service, poor product, etc. So, what does that mean in regards to branding? Your WHOLE business is your brand. From the sign out front to the empty toilet paper holder in the ladies bathroom, it all matters to your customers. If the first thing that comes to mind when your customers think of you is, “They have great food, but the bathroom always has this weird smell…” then your brand is tainted. If your customers love your products, but your billing process is a pain, your brand is tainted.I like to think of branding as a balancing act between the images such as the logo, the flyers, the signs, etc and between the actual experience. You need to have the logos and the signs so that people will take you seriously, but all the expensive logos and signs in the world won’t save you if your receptionist has a bad attitude that turns your customers away.So how do you create a brand that consists of your whole business? One thing that I suggest is that you are constantly looking at ways to improve the systems in your business. (And if you are getting a blank and confused look on your face when I mention systems, I would start by reading Michael Gerber’s book “The E-Myth.”) I like to think of business as being about growth and continual change. To me that means that what worked last month may not work today, so we have to constantly be checking and testing things to make sure that they are still applicable to our business today. So if you notice that at about 3:35pm each day you are getting complaints that the toilet paper holder in the ladies bathroom is empty, maybe you should put a system in place that tells your employees to check the ladies bathroom at 3:25 pm every day and make sure that there are plenty of toilet paper and paper towels. But don’t just change it and leave it. Continue to monitor, because you might notice that the time may change during the winter months and you have to tweak your system again. If you notice that when a potential customer calls everything goes great until they are handed off to a certain person, tweak the system. Maybe listen in to what that person is saying and how they are saying it. If need be, give them a script. If they are not on board with the process, maybe you should look at finding someone who will be, because you cannot afford to have your employees ruining your brand for you. It is all you have.Think back to your childhood and the little hardware store down on the corner. Do you think the owner knew a thing about creating a brand? Probably not. What he did know about was his customers and he knew how to provide good service. He knew that the farmer down the road was about to repair some fences, so when the needed material came in he didn’t just wait for the farmer to saunter in again. He gave him a call and then had it delivered right to his doorstep. He knew the exact types of hinges in your Aunt Millie’s house and how to get replacement ones, because he sold her father the originals years ago. And best of all, he knew your favorite kind of candy and always knew when you needed a pick me up.Am I trying to say that you need to open up a little country hardware store? No. Am I saying that branding is bad? No. What I am saying is that a logo or nice stationary are not going to save you if you have poor customer service or a poor product. I am saying that it is a whole package. You need to take those basics of customer service from the little country hardware store owner and realize that the whole reason a business is known for good service is not because they said so in some ad. It is because their customers said it about them time after time after time. The same can be said for good food, cleanliness, good quality, etc. Remember, if you say it, your customer will question it. If they say it, it is true. Another way to help with this is to get customer feedback on a consistent basis, first of all so that you can know what your customers think about you and secondly so that you can catch the problems in your system quickly. And then, more importantly, once you have the feedback do something about it! I love the way my local Starbuck’s has taken this one step further. Every time I go in there I see a little chalk board saying, “Things we are working on this week.” It then lists 3-4 items that they have received feedback on from customers and that they are working to improve. What this does is it shows your customers that their feedback is important to you.Besides showing your customers that their feedback is important, surveys also help you to work on your business and get it to where it flows like a well oiled machine. A mechanic must know all of the different sounds of an engine so that when one piece is out of sync they know where to look. So you must know the way your business should look, feel, and sound so that when one piece is out of sync you know what needs to be changed. And who knows, it may be your expensive logo or sign.

Each step asks you a series of questions. Grab a journal or copy and paste the questions below and answer them worksheet style. Answering these questions is the first step in creating or re-igniting your personal brand! Let’s get started!Step 1) Find Your Voice

What is your intrinsic value?

What have people said you do really well? Not sure? Take a poll!

What are your key most valuable skills?

What are 3 key messages you wish to bring to the world?

What style represents you? (Formal, Casual, Rebellious, another unique combination?)
Craft your voice so that everything you say, write, and create is in complete alignment with who you are and the value you provide. Authenticity makes your brand building easier and ensures you don’t need to wear a mask or act like someone else when it is showtime! Be yourself.Step 2) Define your Audience

Who is your ideal audience?

Why would they care about your message?

How would you audience benefit from your expertise?

Where can your audience find you?

How do you find them?

What are the best channels of communication with your audience?
Define who your target audience is, with great precision. This goes well beyond demographics and starts the process of creating a persona that represents the ideal person/customer/audience. Remember, you can’t serve who you don’t know and you can’t serve everyone. Being precise in your declaration of who your audience is enables you to focus and provide a clear vision of your value to who you serve.Step 3) Amplify Your Voice

What tools/channels can you leverage to reach your audience? (Blog, Vlog, Podcast, Guest Posts/Articles, Speaking Engagements, etc.)

How can you make it convenient for your audience to hear your voice and interact with you?

Who can help you spread the word? How can you leverage your network?

Where can you promote yourself to reach your audience? (Online and offline)

What are your top 3 key offerings and/or speaking topics?

What level of online visibility do you need?

Do you have professional photographs? (Dedicated professional photos of you for this business purpose). If not, who can you hire to take great pro level photos of you?

What proof points do you have or can you get to support you? (testimonials, endorsements, case studies)

What is the best way for people to contact you?

What type of look & feel do you want for your personal brand? (see what you wrote for finding your voice)
Think of your brand as an extension of you. It is a virtual package of your personal and professional identity so you want to get it right. Remember that your brand is an investment. Poor quality graphics or photos with family/friends/pets cropped out won’t cut it. You want a PROFESSIONAL first impression. Not sure where to start? Think of your favorite actor/singer/musician. Look up their websites and see how they have packaged their brand. Use ones that resonate with you as inspiration.Step 5) Get Feedback & Tune Up

Reading over the information you have gathered, is there anything missing?

Who in your circle will give you honest and meaningful feedback of your personal brand? Choose 3 people who can help you.

What feedback did you receive? Did you notice any trends?

Are all of your visual components consistent? (colors, fonts, language, tone, graphics, and photos.)
Create an action plan to take action and tune.BONUS STEP!What can you do to kick it up a few notches? What help do you need? A speaking coach? A stellar graphic designer? A mentor? Better technology? Take stock of where you are and where you want to be. Then operate from a position of where you want to be, rather than where you are.

Business Planning Basics

When starting a new business venture, the area of business planning is often glazed over rather quickly in order to get the business off the ground fast. While there’s nothing wrong with being eager about starting a new business, many entrepreneurs should take a little bit more time in careful planning before they jump into a new business. Here are a few steps that should be completed in the planning process for a new business.

Market Analysis

One of the first steps that should be done when planning a new business is engaging in a market analysis. As part of a market analysis, an entrepreneur will look at the market in which he plans on launching. The entrepreneur needs to look at the total population of the area and the demographics of the population. He should look at his competition in the area and make sure that the region is big enough to justify another business of this type. If the area is not saturated with competitors and has plenty of people in the target market, then the business should consider moving forward. If not, the entrepreneur may want to scrap the idea and start over.

Summary and Offerings

When creating a business plan, or not you can or should also provide a basic summary of what his business will do and what it can provide. In this section of the document, the entrepreneur should include information about what sets his business partner and why an investor would want to put money into the business.

In this section of the business plan, the entrepreneur should also include information about what products or services will be offered. This should include information about the quality of the products, price points, target market and anything else related to the products or services. This information is essential for any potential lenders or investors to evaluate when looking at funding a new business.

Business Strategy

In addition to providing information about the products and services that will be offered by the company, the business plan should also include some information about what strategies will be used and how they will be implemented. It doesn’t matter how good a company’s products are, they will not be able to reach the target market without the right kind of marketing. As part of coming up with a business strategy, the entrepreneur should include information about marketing tactics and promotions that will be used.

Projections

As part of creating a business plan, the entrepreneur should also come up with some financial projections for the company. This should include some estimate of how much the company will sell over the course of the next year and what expenses the company will incur. Entrepreneurs may also want to create long-term projections of such as 5 or 10 year plans so that potential investors will have this information. When creating projections for the business plan, the entrepreneur should be as conservative as possible. Most of the time, the entrepreneur is a little overly optimistic and does not take into consideration all of the possible problems that could arise.

Considerations

Business planning is an essential step for any new business, regardless of whether it needs funding or not. A good business plan can help the entrepreneur understand exactly how profitable a business can be and what its chances are for success.

Worker Shortage Might Be Excellent News For The Economy

A worker shortage might be excellent news for the economy! Maybe, just maybe, firms will awake and see workers’ substantial contribution to their success. Some CEOs take unconscionable sums and destroy their firm’s value, unlike many frontline workers who create value. During the pandemic, CEOs took vast sums as they laid-off workers. Some firms sought bankruptcy protection, but hat didn’t stop their greedy CEOs from snatching hefty bonuses.

We have a worker shortage and firms are scrambling to hire whomever is willing. Some firms, like McDonalds have paid signing bonuses. Canada’s Loblaw and its competitors paid a bonus to frontline workers when the pandemic began. They stopped it after three months in unison with their competitors. When government confronted them about this collusion, they claimed it happened independently. Go figure! It’s like you caught your three-year-old with her hand in the cookie jar and she said, Mom, “Cookie Monster did it!”

Worker Shortage Inevitable With Shoddy Treatment

Loblaw’s behavior disturbs me. During the bonus period, profits soared. Per se, that’s no problem. I favor firms making profits. To be sure, I am against government taxing profits. But paying workers the bonus during the pandemic shouldn’t hinge on profits. It was just right. Meanwhile, my wife and I shopped at a Loblaw store and workers continued their excellent service despite Loblaw’s slight.

Leaders must realize frontline workers are the firm’s foundation and treat them well, not as cogs turning out CEOs bonuses! When employers treat workers like machines, they disengage. Gallup said, over several decades, they and other researchers found a strong link between employees’ workplace engagement and the company’s overall performance. Yet employers refuse to accept this. But there is good news: surveys show some firms break the mold and treat workers with respect: Cisco, Apple, Accenture, IBM, FedEx are a few.

Next Quarter’s Earnings Drives Businesses

Companies see next quarter as the prize, so they exploit workers and fudge next quarter’s numbers. I repeat: I am against government taxing business. However, I favor the Biden Build Back Better provision to tax share buybacks that the House passed, and it is before the Senate, even if it might have only a modest effect on share buybacks. Companies shouldn’t be spending billions buying back shares while exploiting workers.

Firms should present to shareholder meetings options to use buyback funds. Choices might include effects of paying bonuses to frontline workers with buyback funds. Shareholders should hear about potential strategic investments, too. Another option is stopping buy-backs for five years after layoffs. Executives, too, shouldn’t get bonuses within five years of layoffs. We must get rid of worker exploitation that enhances CEO bonuses.

Importance of Restaurant Marketing Agency

Restaurants need to encompass considerable marketing avenues for the sake of success. Without publicity and marketing, there are chances that the restaurant may not survive in the market. But with thorough planning and enactment, the restaurant’s promotion can grab the customer’s attention just like that.

The restaurant business is quite tough. It is difficult for the owners to flourish in this thrift and with very low profits. Restaurant owners are enthusiastic about food because not much profit is left after paying all the mandatory expenses like produce, wages, upkeep, and maintenance. Better so than eternally, restaurants publicity and marketing are necessary.

Some restaurant owners thoroughly expand their profit margin by contracting their business prototype and resemblance to others, assembling a franchise, spreading their reputation, and cultivating a future passive income. While others choose to concentrate on their flagship eatery, trusting that quality over quality is vital for drumming up future business.

Smart advertising encourages the restaurant owner to create a good reputation in the market and reach customers who might not even have heard about the restaurants near them. It also promotes the restaurants with discounts, offers, special occasions, and new items to the menu.

For marketing purposes, the best way is social media. Whether people are seeking someplace to dine in safely or looking for the best takeaway service, they turn on the social media app. The more the traffic drives to your specific website or page, the more you will succeed in this business.

What the advertising brings to the restaurants

It helps to target customers, as if the customers like the taste of the food at a specific restaurant, they will start recommending that place to their colleagues and friends. Advertising helps target particular types of customers and proves to be more effective.
Advertising certainly helps to stay competitive in the business. The competitors will be advertising their specific establishment to the customers. They will assume that the establishment has lacked publicity, is less thriving, and offers less than the other competitors.
Publicity and advertisement are thoroughly an investment. If the restaurant owner is investing wisely, they will surely profit from that. But the amount to be spent on publicity depends upon the area and type of restaurant. Usually, casual and family-specific restaurants do not spend more on advertising, while fine-dining restaurants spend more because they must create a lavish image.
Publicizing can certainly help to develop crucial aspects of the restaurant’s reputation. Advertising fetches the customers by creating the business’s reputation in the community.
Hiring a marketing agency can reduce almost all of the burden regarding advertisement. A good social media marketing agency can maintain whatsoever the name’s niche and aesthetics through social media. Great brand recognition can lead to more followers, leading to more traffic to the site and a boost in orders.

Uses of Silicon Carbide Ceramics in Different Industries

With the passage of time, there has been continuous development in the world of solar energy, nuclear power, smart grid, electric vehicles, rail transportation, aerospace, aviation, and navigation. Therefore, this trend has increased requirements for power equipment performance. These days, the first generation of silicon materials is about to hit the theoretical limit that was originally determined. The third generation features a wider bandwidth, electron saturation, and thermal conductivity. In this article, we are going to talk about a new type of material called silicon carbide ceramics. And we will specifically discuss the applications of silicon carbide ceramics in different industries. Read on to find out more.

As far as potential is concerned, silicon carbide ceramic is the most mature choice. As a matter of fact, many of its indicators are much better than silicon. For example, it has a 300% higher bandwidth. Apart from this, the theoretical operational temperature of this material is 600 Celsius. Now, let’s talk about the different uses of this material.

Electric Vehicles

Since these modules can have a sustainable, intelligent, low carbon, and green development, we can say that the advantages of this material are primarily reflected in the following three aspects.

1. Simplification of the power supply Network and boosting the frequency

2. Increasing the temperature and reducing losses

3. Improving efficiency and reducing the volume

As far as power conversion is concerned, components made of silicon carbide cal can help improve performance. In electric models, the active load-bearing component is the electric motor. These motors have different rotational speeds. Therefore, these motors require repeated acceleration and acceleration during the process of driving. Therefore, the working condition is more complex compared to the speed regulating system.

Transmission Systems

If you have a silicon-based device, your best choice is are switch made from silicon carbide. This is because this material has an extremely low resistance. Therefore, it is an ideal choice for applications where high frequency and temperature are involved.

The thing is that this material can reduce the loss of power by up to five hundred percent. Moreover, it is possible to reduce weight and size by over 40%. Therefore, it can help have a positive impact on the grid configuration and adjustment of energy strategy.

Solar Energy Field

If you are looking for advice that can be used in solar inverters, silicon carbide is an ideal choice. It comes with a small size, reduced costs, and much higher efficiency. Typically, the conversion efficiency of these inverters is around 96%. But if silicon carbide is used, it is possible to increase the efficiency to 97.5%. In other words, these devices can help produce power losses by 25%. Apart from this, these inverters can help boost conversion efficiency significantly.

LED Lighting

These days, the popularity of LED devices that use silicon carbide is on the rise. The thing is that these LEDs are much brighter and can reduce the cost by up to 50%. They are 200% brighter than other types of lights.

Similarly, they have 10 times more thermal conductivity. In routine life, you can apply this type of lighting for different types of environments, such as color display devices, information screens, indoor lighting, and signal lights. The thing is that they can help reduce pollution and cost.
